Although by no means satisfied with his life of enslavement, Haven carries on, toiling in the mines of the evil Lord Vetch by day and experimenting with amateur inventions at home by night. Content to serve as another cog in Vetch's immorial machine. Haven is drawn into the heart of his people's age-old struggle by the images of a recurring dream.

The subsequent kidnapping of his best friend Chess is somewhat related to his vague nightmare, but the unwitting Haven has yet to learn of his dream's connection to the future freedom of his people.

His first small battle in the war is won, and Haven sets Chess free. In return, she tells him of a wise ancient living on the Isle of Heroes, a man whose knowledge and instruction are imperative to Haven and his epic struggle. Only after competing in a series of deathly challenges does Haven earn the right to speak to the old man, who imparts the truth of Haven's dream and destiny.
