The dark and gloomy Joy Division formed in Salford in 1976. The band rose to fame in 1980 with the posthumous release of the single Love Will Tear Us Apart which was an ironic reference to the song Love Will Keep Us Together. The single was released following the tragic suicide of frontman Ian Curtis. After the death of Ian and the release of their second album Closer, the remaining band members went on to form the equally influential band New Order.
