History:
Since 1798 the name Dow's has been associated with the finest wines from the Douro Valley and is synonymous with tradition and innovation. Dow's new state of the art winery Quinta do Sol, is the most advanced in the Douro valley, built at a cost of £2m and incorporating many new innovative ideas, including a robotic lagar for "treading" the grapes, demonstrates the Symington Family's commitment to the future and to the production of the very finest Ports.
Winemaking Details:
Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) Ports are a blend of wines from the best vineyards from a single good vintage. LBV is matured for 4 to 6 years in wood and bottled when ready to drink. These wines have more depth and complexity than a Ruby or standard Tawny, but are softer and more approachable than Vintage Port. Typically, LBVs have a powerful, attractive aroma, rich, full, fruity flavours and a long, sweet finish plus the softness gained from wood-ageing. Dow's LBV has the traditional slightly drier finish.
Regional Information:
Port takes its name from the city of Oporto in Northern Portugal, but is produced in the sheer terraced vineyards of the Douro River valley, further inland towards the Spanish border.Temperatures range from 35 degrees C in the summer to below 0 in the winter; the rainfall can fall to drought conditions in summer - harsh conditions that lead to excellent concentration of fruit and produces wines of great power. The inaccessibility of the area means the vineyards are still tended and harvested by hand.
