You play the part of a young female archaeologist who stumbles upon a mystery involving the City of Atlantis while searching for Egyptian artefacts, and soon make new friends and enemies. She also discovers a whole new, mysterious world on another level of consciousness, a world in which she must solve puzzles and help people to be able to proceed...
Initially I was very disappointed in Atlantis III, I was under the impression that this would be a point 'n' click'er like Broken Sword or Discworld. The Game mechanics are simple: In a first person view you can rotate your view 360 degrees in all directions, and if the pointer hit something you can pick up, use or someone you can talk to, it changes into a symbol. You then press the X button to execute this action. The action can seem quite stale, at first it feels like you're trapped in some kind of 3d-picture, like "Dracula Repossesed" on PSOne. Soon you'll discover all the little details, which make the scenery come alive. And man, the scenery...
In almost every new screen I wanted to press a button and print out a screenshot to put on my wall. The graphics are beautiful, from photo-realistic scenery to pure sci fi fantasy. The FMV cut-scenes are also very good, but not perfect in motion.
What pleased me about the gameplay was the puzzles. They become increasingly harder and more challenging, and are more than a little satisfying to complete. It's refreshing to do something other than "Find key, open door".
Overall, this would have been a perfect game if developed as a point 'n' click'er, or even with the controls of "Escape From Monkey Island", but it's not. It's also very short, as all these games are. The beautiful graphics and the puzzles save this game from being rubbish, and if you enjoy adventuring on any level, you'll enjoy this on some level too
