Kona Caldera
The Caldera blends Kona's tested frame design with lightweight materials and quality spec to provide a ride that is enjoyable and fun.
FRAME
The frame on the Caldera is made from 7005 aluminium. This is custom butted meaning that the thickness changes throughout the tubing to strengthen it where it is required without adding unecessary weight which would occur if uniform changes to tube thickness were made throughout the frame. A compact rear triangle design means that acceleration is at its most efficient. The frame is more vertically compliant as a result of a closer to parallel top and down tube. A sloping frame design is used which adds to standover clearance. Kona use a longer head tube which distributes shocks better aswell as increasing the overall strength of the frame and improving headset bearing life. More room for correct body positioning is given by the longer than average top tube. Disc mounts are also included which allows for the potential of later upgrade.
DRIVETRAIN
Shimano is used for the drivetrain of the Caldera with Deore dominating most of the components. Deore shifters use Rapidfire which enables you to shift while keeping your hands over the brake levers. They also use a short stroke action which is light and reponsive to decrease fatigue. The Deore front derailleur has a reinforced chain guide which adds rigidity to improve performance. At the rear is an XT derailleur. This uses four fluorine coated pivot pins which reduce friction to improve performance. It also has an alloy construction for lightweight strength and durability. The drivetrain on the Caldera is 27 speed.
SUSPENSION
The suspension on the Caldera comes form a Marzocchi Z5 which providers 80mm of coil sprung travel. The Open Bath system found in Marzochhi forks constantly lubes moving parts aswell as providing damping and acting as a lubricant. This also reduces the amount of time required to maintain the forks. Magnesium lowers contribute to a lightweight, and make for a strong fork when combined with the Easton EA70 stanchions.
BRAKING
Avid Single Digit 3 brakes use force vector alignment. This places the pad closer to the boss to allow more energy to be transferred to the rim. The result is sharper and more dependable braking performance. Avid AD3 levers have a rugged aluminium construction.
WHEELS & TYRES
Shimano Deore hubs are used on the Caldera. These have double contact sealing to shut out water, mud and dirt from the bearings to maintain smoothness and reduce the frequency of services. These are laced to Mavic X139 rims. Tioga Factory XC tyres perform in all conditions while open treads shed mud quickly.
The Caldera combines fantastic quality with the essence of Kona: fun. A high quality drivetrain is durable and improves the standard of the riding experience
